Q1. What is the difference between a university and a university college (in Sweden)?

Two slightly different terms are still used in Sweden to describe institutions of higher education: universitet (university) and högskola (university college).
Universitet can award the PhD degrees while the Högskola does not.

From student perspective, it’s not an issue at all, either you study in Universitet or in Högskola clearly.

Q2. What kinds of degrees can I study?

One year Master’s program, or a degree of Master (Two years). You have an open chance to do PhD from Sweden on scholarship. There are many single courses are teaching in Halmstad University like, Business, Scandinavian Culture, Teaching, Languages, marketing, etc.

Q3. How do I know if my existing high school diploma/bachelor's degree/master's degree is valid in Sweden?

If you are interested to apply for one year, or two years Master’s program, you should have minimum of Bachelor’s degree of three/four years with full time studies.
If you are interested to apply for a single course(s), at least a diploma (one/two years) is required after the Intermediate education (12 years).
This rule is applied for all universities in Sweden.

Q4. How do I apply to the Swedish Institute?

If you are interested to apply either in Master’s program’s or in single course(s), the first step is to go on the following link to make an account, then you can search via courses or universities on the same side to apply. After the successful completion of your form, submit it and send the complete documents (like attested educational certificates, passport copies, IELTS/English Proficiency certificate, Cover letter (you can found this letter in your profile heading on the same website), copy of bank statement, etc).

Q5. Are there tuition fees in Swedish universities?

All tuition fees in Sweden are subsidized by the government. The only expense you have to cover are living expenses, and student union fees

Q6. Can I apply for Scholarship in Sweden for studies?

Yes, you can apply for scholarship; it covers your living expenses also. To apply for scholarship, you must have to check the box (you will see at the end of the application form that you filled on above link for admission) with following statement.

I apply for a Swedish Institute Scholarship and enclose the form with my application package.

Q11. Do I have to apply for a residence permit and visa before I enter Sweden?

We are considering as a non EU/ EEA country. You need to apply for a residence permit directly to the Swedish embassy in Pakistan. The permit must be ready and in your passport before you go.
The Schengen Agreement visa rules apply in Sweden. The Schengen Agreement means, among other things, that the Schengen countries, i.e. Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Norway and Iceland, etc have abolished border controls for persons traveling between these countries.

Q12.  My wife/husband/child is planning to accompany me to Sweden and stay with me while I am studying there. How should they apply and how much money should they prepare?

They should apply as co-applicants to students. Your wife/husband should show that she/he has at least 3500 SEK per month in Sweden, for a child there must be proof of at least 1800 SEK per month in Sweden.

Q13. What about the accommodation in Halmstad?

The accommodation in Halmstad is critical. You can’t find the accommodation easily here if you had not reserved your accommodation from Pakistan before to come here. This is the major problem that all students should have to understand clearly. Otherwise, you are going to panic yourself. When you will get the admission letter from Halmstad University/Studera.nu, after that few days of this letter, you will receive an accommodation letter from Kåren (Halmstad Student Union). You will find different residence options on this letter in which you have to select and give them priorities (For the information, which residence is suitable is for you, see living in Halmstad field). After filling this form, you will send 1500 SEK to the Kåren (Halmstad Student Union) on the address mentioned on form.
If you send this form before the end date mentioned of the form that you receive, Kåren will reserved the room 100% for you, and will inform you as well via email.
Note: This 1500 SEK is non-refundable, if you loose your position in Halmstad.

What happened if I do not send this form? 
As we mentioned earlier, it’s very hard to find out the accommodation in Halmstad, shortage of hostels. Then you have to stay in hotels, they will charge you per night about 500 SEK

Q14. Can I get my visa fee back if my application is rejected?

If your application is rejected, the fee will not be refunded.

Q15. How much workload do the programmes involve?

The programmes are full time programmes, and you should expect to put in at least 40 hours a week. This includes lectures and seminars.

Q16. How much money do I have to bring with me?

Bring about 20,000 SEK to get yourself started. This corresponds to living expenses for about eight months. You can then make arrangements for subsequent monthly transfers from your bank. In order to obtain and entry visa to Sweden, you must prove that you can finance your whole stay in Sweden.

Q17. When should I arrive in Halmstad?

A few days before the beginning of the term, mid August (for autumn term), OR early January (for summer term).

Q18. IELTS is necessary for study in Sweden?

Well, some institutions demand IELTS and you can't get admission without it but some institutions don't care about it unless your English level is good. In Halmstad University, you can show the English Proficiency Certificate (EPC) from you home university/College.
